DEPRESSION CAN MANIFEST IN DIFFERENT WAYS
Socially, depression often leads to a sense of isolation and withdrawal from social interactions. Individuals may experience a reduced desire to engage with others, leading to strained relationships and a limited support network.
Emotionally, depression can manifest as overwhelming sadness, persistent feelings of hopelessness, and a loss of interest or pleasure in once-enjoyed activities. This emotional burden can greatly impair one's ability to experience joy, find motivation, and maintain a positive outlook on life.
Relationally, depression can strain personal relationships and create difficulties in forming and maintaining connections. The negative impact of depression on communication, emotional availability, and self-esteem can strain familial bonds, friendships, and romantic partnerships.
Physically, depression can result in significant changes, including changes in appetite and sleep patterns, chronic fatigue, and decreased energy levels. These physical symptoms further exacerbate the emotional distress associated with depression, contributing to a cycle of fatigue and emotional vulnerability.
Right now you may feel like things will never change but with depression therapy, it is possible to transform your life. Working with the therapists at Baypoint Counseling Center can help you heal from depression and overcome wounds from the past and awaken a new sense of meaning and purpose in life.
YOU ARE NOT ALONE IN THIS FEELING OF DEPRESSION
One in 15 adults is affected by depression and 16% of the population will experience depression at some point in their lives (American Psychiatric Association) and while many will seek treatment, many will not. It’s normal to feel like you should just “shake it off” and expect that these feelings will just go away on their own.
Some people have a genetic predisposition to depression, others develop it as a consequence of life circumstances, such as the loss of a job, health issues, a divorce, the death of a loved one, or past traumas, abuse or neglect.
If depression is not treated, it can have serious impacts on your physical health, your career, your relationship and your overall functioning. People who have had one episode of depression are much more likely to have another one in the future. Depression therapy can help prevent that.
DEPRESSION COUNSELING CAN HELP YOU FEEL HOPEFUL AND JOYFUL AGAIN
People have a hard time overcoming depression alone because sometimes they are in a crisis, or other times, just depression itself makes it difficult to take the first step or understand that there might be a solution. Depression treatment gives you the clarity to understand ways in which to find solutions and guidance in making changes.
Psychotherapists have been treating depression and low self-esteem for years. It is one of the most successfully treated mental health conditions with around 80-90% of people responding well to treatment (American Psychiatric Association). Depression therapy can help you to regain a sense of hope about the future, positive about yourself and eager to engage in activities and interactions with others.
Many people feel a sense of hope just by going to their first session, which if you prefer can be online for depression therapy. We work with private, HIPAA compliant platforms that will allow you to see your therapist from the privacy of your home. After a few sessions, perhaps you will feel more energized and can start to attend sessions in our centrally located office. One step at a time is all it takes to start feeling energy and joy in your life once more.
WITH DEPRESSION TREATMENT LIFE CAN HAVE MEANING AGAIN
Using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) your therapist will help you to make the changes in your behavior that will help you find relief for your depression and increase positive feelings. You will be guided in identifying the source of your sadness, allowing you to change the way you think about things that have happened or are happening to you. With the help of CBT for depression, you can also learn how to challenge some of the catastrophic thinking that may be leading you to your feelings of depression.
WHAT WILL DEPRESSION THERAPY BE LIKE?
Your therapist will offer a safe and supportive space in which to explore your struggle with depression. Together, you will look into the ways in which depression is affecting your life, and together, you will come up with specific goals to achieve throughout your journey.
Once we have a plan that is specifically tailored to your needs, we will start to use a variety of treatment tools based on evidence-based techniques.
In addition to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, our therapists are specifically trained in mindfulness skills for depression. Anxiety is about the fear of the future; depression is usually more about being stuck in the past. Mindfulness will help you learn how to be more present in the moment. You will learn a number of tools to help you be centered in the present and cope with your thoughts and feelings.
We may also use techniques from Somatic therapy, in which we will focus on the way your emotions show up in your body. Going into a “fight or flight” response causes us to hold emotions in our body. Through depression therapy, you will learn how to release them and alleviate your emotions as well as of your physical symptoms.
DEPRESSION THERAPY CAN IMPROVE YOUR SELF-ESTEEM
At Baypoint Counseling Center we believe that building your self-esteem will help you combat mental illness. Through CBT, we will help you reframe the way you see yourself, and lead you to believing in yourself once more. Whether it is the way you feel about your image, your career, or your social self, we will work together to identify what is holding you back from living your true, best self.
YOU MAY STILL HAVE SOME DOUBTS ABOUT DEPRESSION COUNSELING
-
For some people, a combination of medications and therapy is the best option. If after a few sessions, we see that there is no improvement, we may refer you to one of the psychiatrists that we work with, so that, as a team, we can best help you. Medication is ultimately up to you.
-
We offer different prices so that therapy can be affordable to everyone. Our pre-licensed clinicians are supervised, both directly by Dr. Dumas, as well as by an outside supervisor, so in essence you get the care of 3 therapists for a low price.
If you have out-of-network benefits, we will do our best to help you get reimbursed by your insurance company.
Therapy is an investment, but one that will lead you to a more productive life. Think of all the areas of your life that are affected by feelings of depression, and how much things would change if you were no longer feeling so badly.
-
Treatment techniques are constantly evolving. Our therapists at Baypoint Counseling Center, are always learning new ways to treat depression and low self-esteem.
Sometimes, the match with a therapist is not the right one. We will ensure that we match you with the perfect therapist for you. If you feel that you are not clicking, we can always switch you to another therapist. A big part of therapy is about the relationship with your therapist. We will make sure you feel a connection with your therapist, so that together, you form a strong team to battle your depression.
Perhaps you also did not have sufficient sessions. Depression therapy can last a few weeks for some, but for most people with severe symptoms, therapy will be much longer, usually around 12 to 15 sessions. It takes time to implement changes in thinking and behaviors, and if the depression is due to past traumas, you may also need time to process those wounds at your own pace.
