Therapy For Men’s Issues
Does it feel like society is just constantly sending you a message to “man up”? Is it hard to express your emotions and find a place to just feel? Perhaps you have learned how to numb your feelings, but that is not working anymore.
Do you find it hard to connect with friends or family, and are you having trouble keeping relationships? Do you find that you’ve been engaging in unhealthy habits for years and are finding a lack of meaning in your life?
Perhaps you are having issues in your career, and find that what you do no longer defines who you are? Is STRESS at work consuming you and are YOU concerned about what the long term impact on your health might be?
Are people telling you that they are concerned about you, but you just can’t seem to talk to anyone about your thoughts and feelings?
Are you feeling angry and irritable or worried and anxious? Do you have trouble sleeping or sleeping too much? Do you feel sad and hopeless about life, or not feeling great about yourself?
Perhaps you are coping with all these feelings through drugs, alcohol or meaningless sexual interactions. Maybe you are engaging in high risk activities or just not taking care of yourself?
It is not easy to be dealing with all of these things on your own and still have the expectations from the world that you should be superman!

THE ISSUES THAT MEN FACE ARE MANY AND CAN LEAD TO SEVERE IMPACTS ON THEIR MENTAL HEALTH AND PHYSICAL WELL-BEING.
It’s normal for men to have mental health issues. According to the American Psychological Association, 30.6% of men have suffered from a period of depression in their lifetime. In addition, suicide rates for men are four times higher than for women (Center for Disease Control and Prevention). Usually, men tend to self-medicate, being 3 times more likely than women to have issues with alcohol and drugs (CDC). Men are also much less likely than women to seek therapy (NIH).
Society puts a lot of pressure on men to be good providers, and not achieving your career goals can make you feel less than others and lead to low self-esteem, anxiety, and depression.
Historically, we have also taught our boys not to cry, and have constantly sent the message that being too emotional is not being “manly.” The one emotion that society has condoned is anger. Therefore, men tend to cope with many emotions, such as frustration, sadness, loneliness and fear by showing anger or by self-medicating with drugs or alcohol.
Men are also expected to be good in relationships. Being a good boyfriend, husband, son, father or brother is also a top expectation of our society. Sometimes, it can feel overwhelming to wear all those hats in our life.
Men who have experienced trauma, neglect, abandonment, health issues, divorce, or any other loss, are expected to “keep it together.” Usually, men are expected to be “strong” and not break down.
Blocking Emotions Can Have a Huge Impact On Your Life
Whether you are dealing with sadness through anger, or anxiety and stress through drinking, or loneliness through shallow relationships, all of this can wreak havoc in your life.
Anger can destroy relationships, lead to trouble with the law, and career issues. Drinking can also impact all of the above, plus, lead to many physical issues. Shallow relationships can further increase your sense of loneliness and lead to feelings of depression and low self-esteem. By addressing these issues in therapy, you can help mitigate a potential mental health crisis.
THERAPY FOR MEN’S ISSUES CAN HELP
You do not need to feel trapped in this never ending cycle of unhappiness, stress and unfulfilled life. Therapy for men’s issues can help you connect with your emotions, find your true passions, increase your satisfaction in relationships and live the best life you can live.
The therapists at Baypoint Counseling Center are ready to help you through individual therapy as well as through our men’s support group. Whether you choose to do this one on one, (which can be from the privacy of your home, office or even your car, or at our office) or you choose to do this in a group setting at our centrally located Miami office, we can help you feel better again.
What Is Therapy For Men’s Issues Like?
During your treatment, your therapist at Baypoint Counseling Center will tailor a treatment to address the specific issues that you are coping with. We will make sure that we match you with the best therapist for your needs.
If you decide to begin individual therapy, first, your therapist will start by understanding the issues that you are struggling with, and secondly looking into how those issues are interfering with different areas of your life, whether it be work, family, friends, activities, etc.
Then, you and your therapist, as a team, will come up with a few goals for your treatment. You will then learn new coping skills and new communication strategies. You will utilize the time in therapy to process emotions and thoughts in a healthy way. All of this will lead to improvement in overall functioning, better relationships, improved self esteem, greater joy and overall life satisfaction.
Our therapists will employ tools from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to modify your behaviors as well as help you change some of the thoughts that are really not working for you. You may also be taught mindfulness skills through which you will learn how to control your reactivity, be more in the moment and cope with emotions by observing them rather than by reacting to them.
Therapy for men’s issues can make you feel like you are in the driver’s seat again, rather than a passenger of your own life.
Group Therapy Promotes Healing and Growth
If you choose group therapy, you will join a group of men with similar issues to yours. Group therapy provides a sense of community, as well as a feeling that you are not alone, and that what you are feeling, or what you do is common to other men. The support, encouragement and feedback you receive from other men, in a space that is modulated by a therapist making it safe and productive, can generate strong feelings of belonging, fraternity and overall support that is very healing and promotes change.
But Maybe You’re Not Sure If Therapy For Men Is Right For You…
-
Society has always sent the message to men that they should not ask for help. How many times have you been lost but refused to ask a stranger for directions? Men are conditioned to do it on their own, however, we are relational beings, and we need support from each other.
Going to Men’s therapy is like going to a car mechanic when your car breaks down. The car mechanic is the expert on cars, the therapist is the expert on emotions, thoughts, behaviors and relationships.
-
Think of how much time is wasted in your life with all the disruptions that your emotions or current situation is causing you? Therapy does require a commitment of about an hour a week, but if you think of all the positive impact that one hour will have on your life, it is definitely worth it.
In addition at Baypoint Counseling Center, we offer virtual therapy in case you prefer to have a session during your lunch hour, or in between other appointments. We offer a safe, HIPAA-compliant, private platform through which to connect.

All therapists have to abide by the rules and laws of their state, and confidentiality is one of them. Your information cannot be discussed with anyone without your written consent, with the exception of a few life threatening situations.
